Cutting Speed Formulas

RPM Calculation

RPM = (SFM × 12) ÷ (π × Diameter)

Where SFM is surface feet per minute and diameter is in inches

Feed Rate Calculation

Feed Rate = RPM × Chip Load × Flutes

Chip load varies by material and tool geometry

Soft Materials

  • • High cutting speeds
  • • Sharp cutting edges
  • • Good chip evacuation
  • • Flood coolant recommended

Medium Materials

  • • Moderate cutting speeds
  • • Coated tools preferred
  • • Consistent feed rates
  • • Monitor tool wear

Hard Materials

  • • Lower cutting speeds
  • • Rigid machine setup
  • • Carbide or ceramic tools
  • • Constant engagement
